First Album Review From Stockholm!

Every once in a while you run into an artist that for some reason escaped your attention. What a blessing it was that I did, because the Estonian female bass player, Mai Agan, certainly deserves the recognition and will certainly be heard for many years to come. Born in Kuressaare, Estonia, Mai Agan developed a love for music at an early age. After playing the violin for 8 years she fell in love with the bass at the age of 16.From that moment, she’s never looked back and it became clear that her star was on the rise. Despite her youth, her versatility and musicality have taken her on a musical journey covering all genres from jazz to pop and rock bands and has allowed her to share the stage with Estonia’s top musicians such as KERLI, Tiit Paulus, Ain Agan, Riho Sibul, Jaak Johanson, Tuuli Velling, Kaire Vilgats, and Teele Viira. She studied with Raul Vaigla at Georg Ots Tallin Music School and graduated in 2010. She then moved to Sweden to study at Skurups Folkhögskola and later at The Royal Music Academy in Stockholm. In January 2013 she was ready to record her debut album at KMH studios in Stockholm. The result became the album, “LUV” consisting of 10 original compositions.

What strikes me when listening to this collection of songs is the maturity in the songwriting. She combines the elements of jazz and fusion, and the compositions on this album will take you on a musical adventure touching the borders of many different emotions. At times you can feel the melancholy, but yet there is a yearning for joy waiting to come out. And it´s all executed with tremendous musical skill due to the fact that there is a very creative vibe going on in Scandinavia among young jazz musicians. It´s amazing to see and hear the amount of young musicians prepared to carry the torch of good music. And this album is such a perfect example of how talent joins forces to explore and interact in this musical field. On the album Mai teamed up with Swedish musicians Björn Arkö (saxophone), Rasmus Lindelöw (keyboards), Calle Stålenbring (guitar), and Jonathan Lundberg (drums). Do yourself a favor and check out this album and labour of “LUV”. Mark my words; Mai Agan is an artist that we will hear a lot more from in the future. Her musical journey has only begun. Jump on the train…because you don’t wanna be left behind.
